Our History

How it all started...

St. John's Lutheran School (SJLS) began its operation over 50 years ago at its first location in downtown Bakersfield on the corner of 4th and N streets. In 1971 St. John's Lutheran Church moved to 912 New Stine Road; however, the elementary school closed its doors in 1977. In 1982 St. John's once again began operating an elementary school beginning with one Kindergarten class and added classes each year.

Expanding the vision...

St. John's Lutheran School now hosts roughly 500 students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. Our modern campus includes the latest technology for the safety and education of our students. St. John's strives for quality over quantity, providing each of our students with a well-rounded Christian education with a wide variety of academic, fine arts and athletic opportunities.

Where we are headed...

As a part of our "Expanding our Horizon" campaign in conjunction with St. John's Lutheran Church,  SJLS constructed a brand new Jr. High Building with a state-of-the-art computer lab, advanced science lab, and other modern amenities and facilities.  In addition, St. John's Lutheran Church's Event Center serves as a modern and refined cafeteria for our students.

SJLS is always looking to add more opportunities for our students. Most notably, additions include STEM and STEAM programs,  a new jazz band in our instrumental music program, Handbell program and an ever-expanding athletic program.  We have also implemented a gardening program where students get hands on experience learning  how to plant and grow food.
